【美联社纽约州纽温莎镇1月26日电】纽新航港局正在把前空军基地史都华国际机场 (Stewart International Airport) 改造成一座顶级现代机场，以求每年吸引数百万旅客，纾解甘乃迪机场、纽瓦克机场和拉瓜地亚机场日益壅塞的航空交通。官员也希望该机场能成为纽约经济推手。
[纽新航港局执行主任舒里斯]说：“许多人会被不同于纽约其他机场的高质量服务吸引，” 包括容易抵达、大量近距离停车空间、舒服的航厦和准时起飞的班机。且它是 “全球首座碳负极机场，不仅不会排放温室效应气体，更制造和支持足够的环保能源，以抵销飞机排放的气体。”

Rapid expansion might cause concern among environmentalists, but Shorris has pledged to develop "the world's first carbon-negative airport," in which terminals, baggage equipment, offices, stores and restaurants "not only do not produce greenhouse gas emissions but actually produce or support enough green energy to begin to offset the emissions generated by the planes."

Stewart to cut back on carbon

NEW WINDSOR — Stewart International Airport should become “the world’s first carbon-negative airport” and show the way to offsetting the pollution problems rising air travel will bring.
Shorris said, “Cleaner and greener is now the order of the day,” and said Stewart can be a “test bed” for new technologies. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will be the main research partner, Shorris said.
Shorris said his targets are to cut carbon-based energy use by 25 percent by 2009 and 50 percent by 2012.
It was unclear whether his targets include airplane emissions, which will dramatically increase if his plans to grow aviation traffic pan out.
